Tel Aviv District Cmdr. David Tzur announced on Sunday that the police and the IDF were in touch with each other in order to prevent theft of arms and ammunition from military bases. The statement was accompanied by criticism of the current armory guarding policies enabled on the bases.
Last week it was revealed that 40 weapons, including short and long M-16 assault rifles and grenade launchers, were stolen from a base near Kibbutz Hatzor, Army Radio reported.
Tzur accused the judicial system of failing to provide a sufficient deterrent, suggesting they enact a system like the one present in some US States in which a thief convicted three times should be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.
