The 75-year-old woman who was stabbed to death by her husband in a Jerusalem mall on Tuesday had left home last year after being beaten by him, police said Wednesday. Mazal Suleiman died of her wounds at Jerusalem's Hadassah-University Hospital at Ein Kerem shortly after the attack. The couple, who had been separated for the last ten months, apparently met up by accident in Malha Mall, the evening of the day they appeared in a Jerusalem court for a heated separation hearing. The court appearance was the first time they had seen each other since she left. Jerusalem police said Wednesday that they were investigating how Nissan Suleiman, 77, had been able to enter the heavily-guarded mall with the knife in his pocket. The suspect, who was indicted last year after allegedly beating his wife, told police that he always carried the knife in his pocket "for protection" and had since the Six Day War. The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended Suleiman's remand on Wednesday for six days, and he is expected to be charged with murder while in custody.
