Presidential elections to be held June 13

The elections for the next president of Israel will be held on June 13 - and if there is no majority in favor of a single candidate, another vote will be held after a 15-minute break, it was decided on Monday. The Knesset presidency made the decision at the urging of Knesset House Committee Chairwoman Ruhama Avraham. According to Israel Radio, if the second round of voting does not yield the necessary majority of 61, the bottom candidate will drop out of the race, and the top two candidates will run against each other. Vice Premier Shimon Peres has not yet made his candidacy official. Labor MK Colette Avital, who has her party's endorsement, met on Monday with members of the GIL Pensioners Party.
