Rabbi Yosef's would-be killer receives 12 years

A would-be assassin against Shas spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, was sentenced on Thursday by the Jerusalem District Court to 12 years in jail with three years probation. The convict, a 22-year-old Jerusalem resident named Mussa Darwish, was a member of the Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine. In planning the assassination Darwish toured the neighborhood where the rabbi lived and tested access routes and Yosef's security precautions. He was apprehended while trying to obtain an AK-47 assault rifle. He was convicted in the same court earlier this year on charges of assisting the enemy during wartime; belonging to and supporting a terror organization, thereby endangering human life; for putting the Rabbi's Jerusalem home under surveillance; and trying to acquire a weapon for such an attack.
