The body of a woman was found on Saturday night in a field in Ramat Beit Shemesh.
After checking the body, the Magen David Adom crew that arrived at the scene could find no signs of a violent death.
Members of the town's haredi community refused to allow police near the body, and four policemen were lightly injured in the ensuing scuffle.
The residents, meanwhile, took the body to prevent an autopsy, which is forbidden by Jewish law. Police believed the body was being hidden in one of the synagogues in the area.
