Report: Israel reneged on deal to free prisoners

Israel agreed to release 1,100 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for captured IDF soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, but reneged on the deal, the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Friday morning. Reportedly, the deal was proposed by Egypt and Hamas expressed its support. Al-Hayat said that included in the 1,100 prisoners were Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti and PFLP Secretary-General Ahmed Sadat, who was involved in the assassination of tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi in 2001. The newspaper claimed that Israel went back on its word, saying that the time was not appropriate.
