MK Reuven Rivlin (Likud) announced his candidacy for the position of Israel's ninth president, Army Radio reported on Monday afternoon.
"I believe I would be up to the challenge and mend the reputation of the presidency," he wrote in a letter to the other members of Knesset.
Rivlin's main opponent is Shimon Peres, who is also pushing the 'Peres bill' aimed at making the presidential election an open ballot instead of a secret vote.
Rivlin is one of the MKs who opposes the Peres bill.
