Police are investigating suspicions that youths belonging to "satanic cult" attempted to sacrifice a cat on Friday the 13th of this month at a cemetery in the North.
The "ritual" was interrupted by a volunteer from the Ahava animal rescue operation in Kiryat Tivon, who was on patrol at the time.
"We caught them in the act, with candles and stones arranged on a gravestone in the shape of a five-pointed star. Terrible cries of distress were coming from the cat, who was trapped in a large cardboard box," the organization's spokeswoman told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
"Because of the many news stories in Israel, we do not get to think about the activities of satanic cults," she added.
"This isn't just about abusing animals. What is clear is that someone who today slaughters a cat on a grave in a ritual of evil and death is made out of the same stuff that will allow the individual to murder a human being for no reason," the spokeswoman said.
Sana Tanus, an Ahava volunteer, attempted to apprehend the six youths, but they escaped, fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
Tanus filed a complaint with police, who have launched an investigation.
The Ahava organization has appealed for any witnesses who may have information about the suspects to come forward.
The cat is awaiting a warm family who can adopt it. Anyone seeking to adopt the animal should call Ahava on 03-6446888 or 09-9588833.
