The Task Force on Human Trafficking (TFHT) will submit a petition to the Israeli government this week calling for "operative steps" to be taken against human trafficking in Israel.
The petition, signed by thousands of Jews from around the world, including some 400 rabbis and communal leaders in North America, will come only days ahead of the publication of the annual US State Department report on human trafficking which has consistently listed Israel among states that do not meet the minimum standards in combating the phenomenon.
According to Ori Keidar, a legal advisor for TFHT, "We are severely troubled by the increasing connection between organized crime and trafficking in women." Keidar said the organization hoped the police won't "continue their policy of apathy for the fates of victims of sex trafficking."
The petition will be submitted to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, cabinet ministers and MKs in the coalition.
