Shalom: Israel must build ties with Muslim nations

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said on Tuesday morning that Israel must do all it can to blaze the path to improve its relations with moderate Muslim nations. Speaking to Israel Radio prior to his trip to visit his birthplace, and to attend the UN World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia, Shalom said he was proud to be the first Israeli foreign minister to visit the Muslim country. Shalom also noted recent improvements in Israel’s international standing and its relations with Muslim countries. He said most of the improved relations were due to secret activities of the Foreign Ministry. Shalom believed that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was the one who should have been traveling to Tunisia, but since it was impossible, he was asked to go in Sharon’s stead.
