The High Court of Justice was set to discuss on Monday a petition by the Union of Students and Single Mothers requesting that the latter be given the same rights as haredi yeshiva students, Army Radio reported.
According to the law, students at institutions of higher learning are not eligible for a guaranteed minimal income. Therefore, those who are eligible - such as single mothers - must choose between an education and an income.
Yeshiva students, however, do receive the subsidy due to a particular clause regarding the budget of the Religious Affairs Ministry.
"There is no justification for differentiating between yeshiva students and [college] students," said attorney Gilad Barnea, who represents the petitioners. "Everyone is equal, and there is no place for distinctions based on race, sex or color - including the color of the kippa."
