Some 1,000 Palestinian and left-wing activists gathered at the site of the security barrier in Bil'in on Friday afternoon to express their satisfaction over this week's High Court decision to order the IDF to move sections of the fence which Palestinians claimed led to an annexation of their agricultural lands. Israel Radio reported that senior Palestinian Authority officials and Arab Israeli MKs attended the rally in the Palestinian village located between Ramallah and Modi'in Illit. The IDF allowed the demonstrators to enter into the area which, until now, had been defined as a closed military zone, a practice which has led to violent clashes during weekly protests against the fence for the last two years. Tuesday's High Court of Justice ruling meant that the army must change the route of the security fence around a neighborhood of Modi'in Illit. The neighborhood in question is Matityahu East, which has also been the focus of another petition against allegedly illegal housing construction in the western part of the neighborhood by a number of building companies, including Heftsiba Construction, which is currently under threat of financial collapse. The court ruled that the barrier, as it had been planned, would cause disproportionate harm to Bil'in residents because it occupied 260 dunams (65 acres) of Palestinian land and left about 1,700 dunams of Palestinian orchards and pasture land belonging to the village or individual farmers on the 'Israeli' side.
