A 25-year-old Israeli man suspected of raping a young religious woman he was living with was released on bail Monday by a Jerusalem court after promising to marry her, police said. The suspected boyfriend turned rapist, Tomer Gueta, met the 28-year-old woman several years ago and moved in to her Jerusalem apartment a couple weeks ago. Last week, the young woman lodged a complaint with police that she was raped by her boyfriend, who then fled from their flat, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said. While police where searching for him, the suspected rapist called his girlfriend and pressured her to cancel her complaint. He allegedly promised via a rabbi that he would marry her if she did, so that she would not testify against him in court, the police said. Police arrested Gueta on Sunday. It later emerged that the two had indeed drawn up a marriage agreement with the help of rabbi. As police were completing their investigation into the apparent romance gone wrong, the suspect was placed under house arrest Monday by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court.
