Magen David Adom staff were summoned on Monday to Tel Aviv's Floretine neighborhood by a woman about to give birth - and arrived to find the baby already out and the woman on the floor cutting the umbilical cord with glass shards.
According to Army Radio, the woman ran out of the apartment when the medics arrived and headed for the stairwell. The medics resuscitated the baby, who was not breathing, and then brought the child to the hospital in serious condition.
The mother was found shortly afterwards and also taken to the hospital, where doctors were fighting to save the baby's life.
Hospital officials were trying to determine whether the mother had attempted to abort the child.
