Tamir: Judea and Samaria college not a university

The Judea and Samaria College's intention to define itself a "university" was "misleading," Education Minister Yuli Tamir, who is also head of the Council of Higher Education, told Israel Radio Wednesday. "The Council of Higher Education has not decided to grant [university] status to the institution," she said. Earlier Wednesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sent a letter to the college in which he congratulated the institute on its "upgraded" status, Army Radio reported. The Council of Higher Education announced that it would not recognize the college's self-proclaimed university status, adding that it would not provide the school with the additional funding associated with becoming a university.
