The IDF is set to launch a nationwide initiative aimed at retrieving army equipment being kept by former and reserve soldiers.
The plan, to be implemented between August 26 and September 9, will enable those in possession of such equipment to return it to their local IDF bases or police stations without questions asked or names taken.
The IDF will, however, bring in the police if it receives weapons from people with violent criminal records.
Defense officials said that in the last such operation in 2002, the IDF retrieved NIS 5 million-NIS 6m. worth of equipment, adding that the most unusual item they received was a Navy Zodiac speedboat.
Most of the equipment expected to be returned are items like ceramic flak jackets, though guns and other weapons are also expected.
One official said the IDF was keen to avoid a "militia army" with civilians holding on to weapons after being released. He added that it was the duty of former soldiers to return the equipment, as they would be saving the IDF funds that were earmarked for other uses, such as training.
