Glasgow and Barcelona have just opened new kosher restaurants. Glasgow, which had been without a kosher eatery for four years, now features L'Chaim's, which opened last month in the Giffnock synagogue complex. L'Chaim's is under the supervision of the Glasgow and West Scotland Kashrut Commission, and has already has been visited by popular Jewish actress Maureen Lipman and British Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. In Barcelona, Chalfon's - the city's first kosher restaurant - has been opened under the supervision of Barcelona's Chief Rabbi Jacob Carciente. Dr. Chaim Chalfon, the restaurant's founder, has managed to transform Barcelona's Jewish landscape in the few years he has lived in the city. A philanthropist, he has always rushed to the aid of Jews in need, donating numerous Torah scrolls - the most famous in 2004 in memory of the Jews who had perished 500 years earlier in the Inquisition. Chalfon invited the entire Barcelona Jewish community to take part in a celebratory dinner last month. Although upscale, Chalfon's is very reasonably priced, making kosher dining accessible to all, and is located in a magnificent setting in the heart of Barcelona.
