Educational organization to team up with Israel Olympic Committee to celebrate the achievements of Jews in sports.

A Jewish organization has teamed up with the Israel Olympic Committee and local sports legends Esther Roth-Shahamarov and Aleksandr Averbukh to highlight the achievements of Jewish athletes at the Olympics.Roth-Shahamarov and Averbukh are both former Olympians, she in running and he in pole vaulting.Limmud, which organizes educational gatherings for Jews throughout the former Soviet Union, Israel and the US, announced in a press conference on Monday that it will celebrate the achievements of Jews in sports at its conference in Upper Nazareth beginning this Thursday.Chaim Chesler, the head of Limmud FSU, the Russian-speaking branch of the international movement that originated in the UK, said the choice of subject was “not obvious.”He said the goal of introducing the topic to Russian-speaking Jewish audiences was to show “our respect and recognition.”Ilana Romano, the widow of wrestling coach Haim Romano, who was killed by terrorists at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, will also speak at the event.“The first time we heard of this organization we asked ‘what’s Limmud?’” Romano admitted. “They have brought Israelis sports and the memory of the victims of the Munich murderers to Russian-speaking audiences we never reached before.”Upper Nazareth Mayor Shimon Gafso announced at the press conference that a roundabout in his city will be named in honor of the victims of the Munich massacre this Wednesday, the day before the conference begins.
