Police have charged a man with hooliganism and making threats to kill after he tried to enter a synagogue in southern Russia brandishing a broken glass bottle, shouting anti-Semitic slogans, prosecution officials said Monday.
The alleged incident in the city of Rostov-on-Don happened last Friday, two days after a man armed with a knife burst into a synagogue in downtown Moscow and allegedly stabbed and wounded eight men.
The suspect in Friday's disturbance, an 18-year-old man identified as Vadim Domnitsky, faces up to two years in jail, said the regional prosecutor's office.
The man told investigators he carried out the act after watching television reports of the Moscow synagogue attack, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported, citing prosecution officials. In a hearing Monday, a district court ordered that Domnitsky be held in custody.
