Rabbi Shlomo Matusof, in Morocco for decades, dies at 91

Matusof spent time in Germany and France before he was assigned in late 1950 to go to Morocco by the Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

Rabbi Shlomo Matusof, a leader of Chabad-Lubavitch educational activities in Morocco for decades, died Saturday during a visit to New York, according to the Jewish movement's Web site. The Russian-born Matusof, who was 91, died of liver failure, a Chabad spokesman said. He was buried Sunday in New York. Matusof and his sons were among thousands attending the five-day International Conference of Chabad Lubavitch Emissaries. Matusof spent time in Germany and France before he was assigned in late 1950 to go to Morocco by the Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Web site said. "He got the locals to do activities themselves," his son Rabbi Eliyahu Matusof was quoted as saying. "The education was very poor in Morocco. The Jews were very poor." Matusof is survived by his wife, seven rabbi sons and two daughters.
