A swastika and other graffiti were found smeared on the exterior of a synagogue in western Germany, police said Thursday.
The graffiti, which included the words "Germany to the Germans" scrawled next to the swastika, apparently were daubed using chocolate on the outside wall of the synagogue in Paderborn on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, police in the city said in a statement. Wednesday evening was the start of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year.
Displaying Nazi symbols is a criminal offense in Germany, and police said they had opened criminal proceedings.
Police found pieces of chocolate at the scene, but said they had no immediate word on who might have been responsible.
