The wealthy seaside town of Caesarea is at the center of a storm over a government plan to remove it from the Hof Hacarmel regional council and annex it to the Or Akiva Municipality instead, reports Yediot Haifa. A bill to make the change passed its first reading in the Knesset recently, but both the Hof Hacarmel regional council and the town's local committee have vowed to fight the move.
According to the report, the private bill to make the change came before the Knesset after a ministerial committee approved the plan in October. But council head Carmel Sela says the change is being promoted "for political reasons" and the town belongs to Hof Hacarmel. He said the council has "no choice but to begin a fierce public battle to frustrate this immoral, unfair and populist scheme." He also said the initiative breaches the government's agreement with the Rothschild family, which set up a foundation to run the town in the early days of the state.
Caesarea is the only community in Israel run by a private organization.
The head of the town committee, Danny Eichel, also said residents were opposed to being annexed to Or Akiva. He said the initiative was not being made to create any social justice, but to serve "political and economic interests." The council and committee have hired lawyers to fight the case in court. No response was reported from thegovernment.
