Group fights sea pipeline plan

Tzalul says the pipeline would endanger the health of all Haifa residents.

The Tzalul non-profit organization has launched a campaign against Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav's plan to build a pipeline to carry waste from Kishon River factories out to sea, reports Yediot Haifa. But Yahav said the sea pipeline plan was designed in conjunction with the Ministry for Environmental Protection. According to the report, Tzalul says the pipeline would endanger the health of all Haifa residents, and has plastered the city with posters saying, "We do not want to swim in waste from the Kishon." A Tzalul spokesman said it was "distorted and delusional" to think it was better to pour waste into the sea rather than into the river, and that instead of either, the wastes should be treated on site by the factories that were creating them. But Yahav said the pipeline plan had been created in conjunction with the Ministry for Environmental Protection, which had examined the idea "with diligence and reliability." He said he had the health and quality of life of all Haifa residents in mind when weighing up all the factors involved in the sea pipeline.
