Haifa has become the 15th Israeli city to sign a pact to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution, reports Yediot Haifa. The city has committed itself to coming up with a comprehensive plan within one year to reduce pollution and introduce environmentally friendly measures.
According to the report, Haifa has committed itself to preparing a plan that will include environmentally friendly energy usage and building projects, ideas for transport and fuels, garbage recycling and open green spaces.
Councilor Dr. Boris Lazarov said the Haifa Bay area was particularly problematic because of its many chemical factories and crowded public transport. He urged Mayor Yona Yahav to use the next council meeting to convene a team to prepare the plan.
