The Or Yarok (Green Light) non-profit organization of Hod Hasharon has embarked on a campaign to get the country's mayors and candidates in the coming municipal elections to sign a pact vowing to fight for increased safety on the roads, reports www.local.co.il. The "Mayors Sign for Life" campaign aims to force local authorities to put road safety at the top of their agendas and to work in conjunction with national road safety efforts by studying local problem areas and coming up with solutions to eliminate them.
According to the report, some 450 people are killed and some 30,000 are injured in traffic accidents every year, and car accidents cost the Israeli economy an estimated NIS 12 billion annually. Among the local authorities that have already agreed to sign the pact are Hod Hasharon, Lev Hasharon, Tel Mond, Herzliya, Netanya and a number of other local councils around the country. The campaign will continue until the beginning of June.
