The continuing furor over the stench at the Golda elementary school in Kfar Saba reached new heights last week, with the city offering to transfer the children to a disused old high school and parents rejecting the offer on the grounds that the proposed school lacks basic facilities, reports the Hebrew weekly Ha'ir-Tzomet Hasharon.
Parents have kept their children out of school in recent weeks because of the smells, which were first noticed almost two months ago and led many students to complain of nausea and weakness.
According to the report, although the Ministry of Environmental Protection has checked the school and found no health risk in the smells, parents remain unsatisfied and many have kept their children at home. The municipality proposed moving the children to the old Ben Zvi high school, saying it could be prepared for the elementary students within a week. But the Golda parents' committee has rejected the idea, saying that moving to Ben Zvi is a "very bad" idea, both because it lacks basic facilities suitable for young children and because it is now used by various non-profit organizations and adult education courses, with whom the Golda children would have to share the premises.
A municipal spokesman said the city was doing everything it could to keep the children in a school routine, and its offer to move them to Ben Zvi had been made in accordance with this aim. But the spokesman added that the city could not intervene in the parents' committee's decision.
