Cities put the sting on mosquitos

The north Sharon municipal union has begun a campaign to tackle mosquito breeding grounds in a number of cities, reports http://www.local.co.il. Union head Uzi Cohen, who is also the deputy mayor of Ra'anana, said an extensive scientific study had found that a major breeding ground for mosquitoes lies under roadside drains, where wet leaves and debris collect and rot, providing an ideal home for mosquito larvae. According to the report, the union presented its findings to the Environmental Protection Ministry and the company that manufactures the drains. The group has decided to test a different drainage system in several cities that aims to prevent debris from piling up and rotting. Cohen said the ministry is providing a special grant for the pilot project, and, if it proves successful, will provide funds to introduce the new drainage system to other cities.
