Tidbits
You know that winter is here when you see the first Crembo snacks in the stores, the chocolate-covered cream on top of a biscuit that many kids prefer to ice cream.
In France, the third Thursday in November is traditionally the day when the new Beaujolais Nouveau goes on sale. In Israel this occasion is celebrated with the introduction of some new, young wines. The Golan wineries is offering a Gamay Nouveau, a Beaujolais-type wine from the 2007 vintage, which tastes very fresh and fruity, and is supposed to be drunk right away. A screw-cap bottle is sold at around NIS 36.
Pizza Hut has a new type of pizza, called pizza-pan, a large-size pie with a thick, chewy crust, enough for eight slices. My family prefers the "New York-style" pizza with a thinner crust, but that's a matter of taste. The price is NIS 77.90.
The fast-food chains are joining in on the tortilla trend, and McDonald's has a new meal called Chicken Tortilla, consisting of two tortilla wraps with chicken, a dressing of your choice, chips or potato wedges and a drink. The price is NIS 35.
KFC also has tortilla wraps on the menu, and a meal called Twister consisting of two tortilla wraps with chicken, a drink and a side dish, such as fries, rice, coleslaw, salad or mashed potatoes; the price is NIS 39.90.
You know that winter is here when you see the first Crembo snacks in the stores, the chocolate-covered cream on top of a biscuit that many kids prefer to ice cream. Feldman's variation is called Manbo, and it comes in vanilla, caramel and mocha flavors; a six-pack is NIS 10, and an economy-size package of 20 is NIS 18.
Nestlé makes a Crembo filled with real ice cream, called Lekbo, much tastier in our view than the somewhat plastic taste of the traditional crème fillings. The new addition is the mocha Lekbo; a six-pack is NIS 27, which makes this a much more expensive treat.
Yad Hamelech has a few new salads on the shelves for those who like it a bit spicier. They are the Iraqi Amba, a mango salad containing whole pieces of mango, a Moroccan carrot salad, a carrot-lemon salad and a beet salad. The Amba salad is NIS 7.50 for a 250-gr. container, and the other salads are NIS 11.50.
Monday is the name of a cereal brand, suitable for every day of the week. One of my daughters liked the Monday Cookies cereal, more a snack than breakfast really. Other Monday cereals are honey-nut, berry mix, raisin bran, coco crunchies or start (whole wheat cereal flakes with dried strawberries). Prices vary from NIS 20 to NIS 28.
Orbit has a new flavor in its line of sugarless gums: strawberry. One package containing five gums is sold at NIS 2.35, and a family-size package containing four packages is NIS 7.70.
Those who like wafers may enjoy the new Karmit Ego double-chocolate wafer sticks, with a bitter chocolate cream filling and a milk-chocolate cover; a package is NIS 8.
