Afghan security forces killed six Taliban in an intense gunbattle in southern Afghanistan, an official said.
No Afghan soldiers suffered any casualties in the fighting Friday in three villages near Helmand province's Sangin district, said Mullah Amir Akhandzada, a deputy governor.
"We sent our soldiers there after a number of Taliban entered those villages and briefly took control," he said.
Although Taliban and Afghan forces often clash in Afghanistan, the latest rebel killings came hours after a suicide car bomber killed himself while trying to attack on an Afghan army convoy in the country's south, while in the north a militant was killed when a bomb he was carrying in a cart exploded, military officials said.
