Afghanistan: Taliban kidnaps 2 Pakistani reporters

The Taliban has kidnapped two Pakistani journalists in southern Afghanistan, a spokesman for the militant group and a wife of one of the missing men said on Saturday night. Syed Saleem Shahzad, from The Star newspaper in the southern city of Karachi, and Qamar Yousafzai, a reporter with various newspapers in southwestern Quetta, were last heard of in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on Nov. 19, according to Shahzad's wife, Anita Saleem. The Star said in a report Saturday that they had been kidnapped by the Taliban in neighboring Helmand province on Nov. 21. Taliban spokesman Mohammed Hanif said two Pakistani reporters were detained by the group in Helmand's Baghran district for "entering Afghanistan without any documents," but added that the men were safe and would be freed Sunday. Hanif, speaking to The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location inside Afghanistan, said the Pakistanis were safe and would be released somewhere along the border separating the two countries.
