British soldier killed by gunfire in southern Iraq

A British soldier has died following a small arms fire attack in southern Iraq, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday. The soldier, a member of the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, was attacked while on patrol fire in Basra's Al Maqil district on Tuesday, the ministry said. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, the ministry said. The soldier's family has been told of his death, but he was not identified.
