Cheney in Ramallah: peace requires 'painful concessions'

US Vice President Dick Cheney says an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement will require "painful concessions" by both sides. However, he says the sides must work together to defeat those "committed to violence." Cheney spoke in the West Bank on Sunday after meeting the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas. Cheney says the US remains "strongly committed" to the establishment of a Palestinian state. But, he adds, peace between Israel and the Palestinians will require "a tremendous effort at the negotiating table" as well as efforts to defeat extremists.
