Egypt increases army presence along Gaza border

Egypt was intensifying its military presence along the Philadelphi corridor, on the Gaza-Egypt border, for fear that Palestinian extremists might attempt to break through the Rafah border crossing, Israel Radio reported on Wednesday afternoon. Cairo confirmed that hundreds of border police officers were sent to deploy along the border, joining the 750 Egyptian officers already deployed there. The decision was taken after hundreds of Palestinians protested at the Rafah crossing on Tuesday, demanding to reopen the crossing, closed since Hamas's takeover of the Gaza Strip last month.
