President Hosni Mubarak's ruling party won a majority of seats in Egypt's upper house of parliament in elections that war marred by violence and accusations of irregularities, a state-run newspaper reported Tuesday.
Candidates fielded by the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful opposition group, failed to win any seats in the 264-seat Shura Council, or consultative body, Al-Gomhoria newspaper reported in early Wednesday editions.
The ruling National Democratic Party seized most of the 88 contested seats in Monday's election, the newspaper reported. Official numbers were not released, with the newspaper saying only that none of seats went to the Brotherhood and a majority went to the NDP. At least one leftist opposition party fielded a candidate in the elections. It was immediately known if that candidate won.
