Fayad warns civil servants he'll dock pay for each strike day

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad has taken on the powerful civil servants' union, saying on Thursday that he would dock the pay of striking union members. The union has held repeated warning strikes in recent months, calling for wage increases. Fayad said every strike day would be deducted from the employees' salaries. He added that civil servants have received 27-percent salary increases in the past three years, and that the government cannot afford to pay them more. However, union chief Jamil Shehadeh said the civil servants would not back down.
