A delegation of Hamas leaders from Gaza has entered Egypt under heavy security for a meeting with former US President Jimmy Carter.
The Islamist group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, announced Wednesday that two of its Gaza leaders, Mahmoud Zahar and Said Siyam, were going to meet Carter in Cairo either Wednesday or Thursday. The delegation also includes Zahar's son Mohammed, Siyam's aide Jamil Rizq and Hamas spokesman Taher Nunu.
A Hamas security official said the leaders will also meet Egyptian officials to discuss ways to calm Gaza and open the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.
Carter, who is scheduled to arrive in Egypt later Wednesday, has drawn criticism from the US and Israel for meeting Hamas officials.
