Iraq's national security advisor on Sunday announced the arrest of a man he said was the number 2 in al-Qaida in Iraq after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and was responsible for the person who carried out the bombing of a Shi'ite shrine in Samarra in February.
Mouwaffak al-Rubaie said Hamed Jumaa Farid al-Saeedy, known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana, was arrested a few days ago. The Samarra attack inflamed tensions between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims and trigerred reprisal attacks that continue to this day.
