Iraq: Basra police chief survives 2nd assassination attempt

The police chief in Iraq's second-largest city said he survived a bomb attack Wednesday - the second attempt on his life in less than a week. Basra Police Chief Maj. Gen. Jalil Khalaf escaped unharmed after his convoy was hit by a roadside bomb early Wednesday. Three of his bodyguards were wounded in the attack, he said. On Saturday, Khalaf was leaving his operations command headquarters at the Shatt al-Arab hotel in Garma, a northern section of Basra, when a bomb exploded near his vehicle, police said. Two guards were wounded and the vehicle was damaged, police said. But neither Khalaf nor another police official traveling with him, Lt. Gen. Mohan al-Fireji, were hurt.
