Iraq: Protesters enter damaged Shi'ite shrine

Two civilians and an Iraqi policeman were wounded in a violent demonstration at a Shi'ite shrine north of Baghdad, the US military said Monday. About 50 protesters forced their way Sunday into the Golden Dome in Samarra, 95 kilometers north of Baghdad. The shrine was bombed by Sunni extremists 10 months ago, triggering the current cycle of retaliatory attacks between Sunnis and Shi'ites. Gunmen fired into the air, then entered the shrine. When Iraqi police deployed to disperse the crowd, a firefight broke out, the military said in a statement. Eight people were detained for questioning, the statement said.
