The US military says an American Marine has been killed during a small-arms fire attack west of Baghdad.
A statement issued Friday says the Multi-National Force - West Marine was killed the day before during security operations about a kilometer east of Fallujah.
Fallujah is a former insurgent stronghold in Anbar province that has seen a sharp decline in violence after local Sunnis turned against al-Qaida in Iraq. But sporadic attacks continue.
Thursday's attack raises to at least 4,142 members of the US military who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003. That's according to an Associated Press count.
