Jordan: Prison warden fired after inmates injure selves during HRW visit

Jordanian authorities dismissed a prison warden following an incident in which inmates reportedly deliberately injured themselves during a visit by the Human Rights Watch, police spokesman Maj. Bashir al-Da'aja said Wednesday.
The spokesman said that Maj. Majid al-Rawashdeh, director of the Swaqa Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, was replaced by a higher ranking officer, Col. Abel-Karim Oqeili.
Al-Da'aja said the dismissal occurred Tuesday, two days after more than 100 inmates at the prison deliberately injured themselves while Human Rights Watch representatives toured the facility. The watchdog was on a fact-finding mission to Jordanian jails, where local opposition and human rights groups claim that torture is practiced on detainees.
