Lebanese parliament unlikely to convene to elect army chief president

Lebanon's Parliament was unlikely to convene to elect a president once again - as political wrangling continued to hold up a deal on endorsing the army chief as a consensus candidate to fill the vacant post, despite the mediation here of France's foreign minister. The parliament was to meet Friday to vote to approve Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman for the presidency. But by late Thursday, the session had not been officially canceled as in some previous postponements - meaning it could remain on track but because of no agreement between the opposition and the majority, the vote itself was unlikely. On two occasions since September, majority lawmakers showed up but an opposition boycott prevented the session from convening due to lack of quorum.
