An Israeli businessman who was feared kidnapped by al-Qaida in Algeria contacted his family on Friday after nearly a week, according to Israeli media reports.
Earlier Friday, London-based Arab-language newspaper Asharq Alawsat reported that security forces in Algeria were trying to contact the Israeli man, who also carried a Spanish passport, in Hassi Messaoud, an oil-rich region some 800 km from the Algerian capital.
While no one has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, Algerianauthorities suspected the man was being held by al-QaidaOrganization in the Islamic Maghreb, a local terror group which aims tooverthrow the Algerian government.
Authorities did not know how the Israeli reached the region and whetherhis Spanish passport was real or forged, the paper reported.
The FBI was reportedly working with Algerian security forces on the investigation.
