Jordan's military prosecutor on Sunday filed charges of harming the dignity of the state against the secretary-general of the Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the country's Muslim Brotherhood movement and its largest opposition group.
Jamil Abu-Bakr was charged for allegedly allowing two lawmakers to use the Islamic Action Front Web site to criticize the government of former Prime Minister Faisal al-Fayez for "appointing employees in high rank positions without logical basis."
Abu-Bakr, who was arrested on April 19, 2004, during a raid on his house, is free on bail of 1,000 Jordanian dinars (US$1,400).
He pleaded innocent to the charge, which one of the lawmakers, Zuhair Abul-Ragheb, said was without merit and substantiation.
No trial date was set.
