Egypt will continue to supply electricity to the besieged neighboring Gaza Strip despite an EU cut of power subsidies, an official spokesman said Monday.
"This is part of our commitment to provide all kinds of possible support to the Palestinians," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hosam Zaki said in a statement.
On Sunday, the European Union stopped paying for fuel to power generators that produce electricity for at least half of Gaza's population of 1.4 million accusing Hamas of "diverting" electricity revenues. Hamas has denied the charge.
"No one should tamper with the basic services for the Palestinians. This should not be allowed whatever the reason behind it," Zaki said.
