The Palestinian Authority's
internationally respected finance minister, Salaam Fayyad, intends to resign to run for parliament as a candidate of the ruling Fatah Party, a Palestinian official said Saturday.
Fayyad, credited with curbing corruption and cronyism in Palestinian institutions, is one of several ministers who plan to submit their resignations by Wednesday so they can run in elections scheduled for Jan. 25, Cabinet Secretary Samir Huleileh said. The resignations would take effect immediately.
Fayyad was in Saudi Arabia
and unavailable for comment. He could serve as finance minister in the next government whether or not he is elected to parliament.
