PA security negotiates with kidnappers of 3 Brits

Palestinian security forces are negotiating with the gunmen who kidnapped three British citizens as they entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt, a security official said. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity since he was not authorized to speak with the media, would not say when he thought the captives would be released nor give further details. Recent kidnappings of foreigners in Gaza have ended without bloodshed and with the hostages being released unharmed. Security officials in Gaza said Wednesday that one of the victims is a human rights worker but had no further details. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Palestinian security spokesman Adnan Barbach confirmed that the three are British citizens. The abduction Wednesday was the latest of several kidnappings that have undermined Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' attempts to establish order in the coastal strip following Israel's withdrawal this summer.
