Palestinian teachers say planned strike still on

The Palestinian teachers' union on Friday said it still plans to launch an open-ended strike on the first day of school, refuting a statement that said the strike had been called off. A union official said the statement, which had the union's official logo on it and was distributed to reporters, was fake. It was not immediately known who sent the statement. Initial calls to union officials to confirm the authenticity of the statement were not answered. The teachers have threatened to shut down the schools beginning Saturday - the first day of the school year - because the cash-strapped Hamas-run government hasn't paid their salaries.
