Report: Al Qaida seeking Beirut base

The Lebanese interior minister Ahmad Fatfat said on Sunday that Syria was facilitating al Qaida infiltrations into Lebanon. He also said that the Lebanese Security forces recently dismantled two bands of terrorists suspected of belonging to the al Qaida network. "We know that for four or five months al Qaida has been trying to establish a presence in Lebanon," said Fatfat. The interior minister further claimed that al-Qaida was behind the rocket attacks on Israel in December thereby strengthening al Qaida chief in Iraq Abu Mussab al Zarqawi's declaration of responsibility.
