Russian diplomats were looking into the detention of a Russian citizen by Israeli forces in the Gaza strip, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
Abu Snein Sami Jaber, who had received Russian citizenship while studying in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar, was detained by the IDF in the Gaza strip on Sunday, where rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah were battling each other.
Israeli troops entered southern Gaza late Sunday, according to witnesses. The military said it was a routine, small-scale operation aimed at demonstrating a presence and deterring rocket fire.
IDF officials said the detainee was being held in custody in Ashkelon.
